- King was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 15th, 1929.
- His father was a minister and his mother was a schoolteacher.
- King attended Morehouse College and then the University of Alabama where he received his medical degree.
- After completing his medical training, King served as an intern in a hospital in Montgomery, Alabama.
- In 1955, King became the pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, where he preached against racial segregation and inequality.
- On December 1st, 1955, King delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. during the campaign to desegregate public accommodations.
- In 1957, King co-founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), an organization that aimed to assist African Americans in the fight for civil rights.
- The SCLC played a pivotal role in organizing the 1963 March on Washington which saw more than 250,000 protesters gather to demand equal rights for black Americans.
- In 1964, King was arrested for protesting against segregated busing in Birmingham, Alabama. He was later released without charge.
